Complete Oil Specifications

Your 2022 BMW X3 xDrive30i requires 0W-20 oil meeting BMW Longlife-17 FE+ (LL-17 FE+) — a specification introduced with the B48 Gen2 engine family that is not backward compatible with older BMW Longlife specs (LL-04, LL-01).

Why BMW LL-17 FE+ / 0W-20 is Critical for This Engine

The B48B20B is BMW’s second-generation B48 TwinPower unit — featuring a closed-deck aluminium block, twin-scroll turbocharger, and integrated exhaust manifold. BMW Longlife-17 FE+ is a Condition Based Service (CBS) oil formulated to last up to 24,000 km under ideal conditions and 10,000 miles at minimum.

LL-17 FE+ uses ACEA C5 chemistry — lower HTHS viscosity and reduced SAPS levels compared to the older LL-04 spec. This reduces friction losses and protects the close-coupled catalytic converter and optional GPF from metallic ash fouling.

Using older BMW LL-04 or LL-01 oil will:

  • ❌ Invalidate the CBS interval — the car will flag an early service warning
  • ❌ Introduce higher-viscosity base oil incompatible with the B48B20B’s bearing clearances
  • ❌ Deposit elevated metallic ash on the catalytic converter, increasing emissions

BMW-Approved Oil Brands

  • ✅ BMW TwinPower Turbo Motor Oil 0W-20

  • ✅ Castrol EDGE Professional LL IV FE 0W-20

  • ✅ Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 0W-20

  • ✅ Liqui-Moly Special Tec V 0W-20

  • ✅ Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20

Confirm “BMW Longlife-17 FE+” on the bottle. BMW also approves oils labelled “BMW LL-17 FE+” as equivalent. Do not use oils marked only LL-04, LL-01, or LL-14 FE+ — these are not compatible with the B48B20B.

Severe Service Check

CBS monitors driving conditions and may call for service before 10,000 miles. You should plan for the 7500-mile benchmark if you:

  • Frequently tow a trailer or carry near-maximum payload
  • Drive in sustained high-speed motorway conditions above 130 km/h
  • Drive in extreme heat (above 40°C ambient) regularly
  • Make frequent short trips where the engine doesn’t reach full operating temperature

Installation Details

Drain Plug Torque: 25 Nm

OEM Filter: BMW 11 42 8 575 211 (spin-on element; filter housing: 25 Nm)

Aftermarket Filters:

  • Mann HU7048z

  • Mahle OC1093

  • Febi 176430

Pro Tip: The B48 drain plug is on the driver’s side of the sump — accessible from below. The plastic undertray requires a T40 Torx and several plastic push-pin fasteners to remove. BMW’s oil drain plug is a single-use design on some production runs — check for an aluminium or plastic expanding-type plug before reuse.

FAQs

What oil does a 2022 BMW X3 xDrive30i take? 0W-20 meeting BMW Longlife-17 FE+ (LL-17 FE+) and ACEA C5. Do not use older BMW Longlife specifications.

How many quarts does it need? 5.6 quarts with a new filter, 5.1 without.

Can I use BMW LL-04 oil I have from my older BMW? No. LL-04 is not compatible with the B48B20B. It has different viscosity and additive chemistry — using it invalidates the CBS service interval and may cause catalytic converter damage over time.

What is BMW CBS and does it affect when I change the oil? CBS (Condition Based Service) monitors engine load, start-stop cycles, temperature, and oil consumption. It calculates the optimal change interval up to a maximum of 24,000 km / 2 years. The 10,000-mile guideline is a conservative minimum — CBS may extend beyond this under favourable driving conditions.

Is synthetic oil required? Yes. BMW Longlife-17 FE+ is a full synthetic specification only. No conventional or semi-synthetic oil meets the LL-17 FE+ standard.

How often should I change the oil? Follow the CBS indicator on the iDrive. Never exceed 10000 miles or 12 months as a minimum interval regardless of CBS status.
