Complete Oil Specifications

The 2022 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L Coyote V8 has two official viscosity recommendations depending on how you drive. Most owners use 5W-20 for normal street driving. The 5W-50 spec is reserved for Track Pack / Performance Pack models or sustained high-RPM track use.

Quick Reference

Specification Value

Viscosity (track / Performance Pack) 5W-50
API Rating API SP
ILSAC Rating GF-6A
Capacity (with filter) 9.5 quarts
Oil Filter Motorcraft FL-500-S
Normal Interval 10000 miles

5W-20 vs 5W-50 — Which Do You Need?

Use 5W-20 if you:

  • Drive primarily on public roads
  • Do not have the Track Pack or Performance Pack option
  • Do not participate in frequent track days or autocross

Use 5W-50 if you:

  • Have the Track Pack or Handling Package installed
  • Regularly run the car on a closed circuit at sustained high RPM
  • Drive in extremely high ambient temperatures (above 100°F / 38°C) under load

Publishing 5W-50 as the universal default would mislead approximately 80% of Mustang GT owners. Ford’s factory fill for standard Mustang GTs is 5W-20.

Ford-Approved Oil Brands

  • ✅ Motorcraft Full Synthetic 5W-20 (normal driving)

  • ✅ Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-20 (normal driving)

  • ✅ Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 5W-20 (normal driving)

  • ✅ Motorcraft Full Synthetic 5W-50 (track / Performance Pack)

  • ✅ Mobil 1 FS 5W-50 (track / Performance Pack)

  • ✅ Castrol Edge Full Synthetic 5W-50 (track / Performance Pack)

Severe Service Check

Use the 5000 interval if you:

  • Participate in track days, HPDE events, or autocross
  • Tow a trailer with your Mustang
  • Operate in extreme heat conditions
  • Notice oil deterioration before 10,000 miles

Installation Details

Drain Plug Torque: 19 ft-lbs

OEM Filter: Motorcraft FL-500-S

Aftermarket Filters:

  • Mobil 1 M1-108A

  • WIX 51516

  • K&N HP-1017

Pro Tip: The 5.0L Coyote holds a substantial 9.5 quarts — never skip a full drain at the start of a track day. Old, heat-cycled oil loses shear stability far faster than fresh oil.

FAQs

What oil does a 2022 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L take?
5W-20 full synthetic for normal driving (API SP / GF-6A). Use 5W-50 only for track or Performance Pack applications.

How many quarts does it need?
9.5 quarts with a new filter.

Why does Ford list two different viscosities?
The 5.0L Coyote runs fine on 5W-20 in normal conditions, but sustained high-RPM track use generates extreme heat that benefits from the thicker 5W-50 film. The two specs are not interchangeable defaults — use the one that matches your driving.

Is full synthetic required?
Yes. The 5.0L’s Ti-VCT variable valve timing system and tight manufacturing tolerances require synthetic to maintain film thickness across the entire temperature range.

How often should I change the oil?
Every 10,000 miles for normal driving. After each track day or every 5,000 miles for Performance Pack / severe use.
