Complete Oil Specifications
GM’s owner manual for the 2023 Chevrolet Camaro with the 6.2L V8 Engine (LT1) says to use engine oil that meets the dexosR specification, in SAE 0W-40 viscosity. Look for the dexosR approved logo. Engine oil capacity is 9.5 L (10.0 qt) with the filter.
If 0W-40 dexosR Isn’t Available
GM allows SAE 5W-30 full synthetic oil for street use only when 0W-40 dexosR oil isn’t available. The manual words this two ways: page 236 says SAE 5W-30 dexos1 full synthetic, and page 237 says SAE 5W-30 dexosR full synthetic.
When to Change the Oil
The Camaro uses GM’s Engine Oil Life System, which works out the change point from engine revolutions, temperature and miles driven. When CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON appears, change the oil within the next 1 000 km (600 mi). GM also requires:
- At least once a year: change the oil and filter, even if the system hasn’t asked for it.
- After an accidental reset: change the oil at 5 000 km (3,000 mi) since the last change.
