Why Renault RN17 Matters for the H5Ht TCe

The H5Ht is a 1.3L 4-cylinder turbocharged direct-injection engine developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. For 2022 model year Dacia Dusters, this engine is fitted with a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) as required by Euro 6d emissions regulations.

The RN17 specification was introduced specifically to replace the older RN0710 (High-SAPS) specification for GPF-equipped petrol engines:

  • RN0710 will clog the GPF: Older Renault engines used RN0710 (5W-40, full SAPS). The sulphated ash in those oils accumulates in the GPF substrate, shortening its service life and eventually triggering regeneration failures.
  • RN17 is Low-SAPS (ACEA C5): Low ash content keeps the GPF clean through normal passive and active regeneration cycles.
  • Extended drain interval: RN17 is formulated for 30,000 km / 2-year service intervals, contributing to Dacia’s low running cost positioning.

The unusually large oil capacity (5.7 qt for a 1.3L engine) is intentional: Renault’s extended-interval philosophy requires a larger sump volume to maintain oil quality over 30,000 km.

Renault/Dacia-Approved Oil Brands

  • ✅ ELF Evolution 900 SXR 5W-30 (Renault RN17 certified)

  • ✅ Total Quartz INEO ECS 5W-30

  • ✅ Castrol Edge 5W-30 LL

  • ✅ Shell Helix Ultra ECT C5 5W-30

  • ✅ Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30

Confirm Renault RN17 on the label or data sheet. RN0700 or RN0710 oils must not be used — they are not GPF-compatible.

Severe Service Check

You need the 9000-mile interval if you:

  • Drive predominantly short trips under 5 miles (prevents GPF passive regeneration)
  • Operate in severe off-road or dusty conditions regularly
  • Tow trailers at or near the Duster’s maximum towing capacity
  • Drive in sustained extreme temperatures

FAQs

What oil does a 2022 Dacia Duster 1.3 TCe take? 5W-30 full synthetic oil meeting Renault RN17 and ACEA C5.

Can I use Renault RN0710 (5W-40) oil? No. RN0710 is a high-SAPS specification for older engines without GPF. Using it in the 2022 H5Ht will progressively clog the Gasoline Particulate Filter.

Why does a 1.3L engine need 5.7 quarts of oil? Renault uses an oversized sump to maintain oil quality over 30,000 km extended drain intervals. This is by design — do not underfill.

How often should I change the oil? Every 18,000 miles or 2 years for normal driving. Every 9,000 miles or 1 year for severe conditions including frequent short trips.
