Why MB 229.71 Matters for the M282

The A200’s M282 engine is a co-development between Mercedes-Benz and Renault — it is not related to the older M270 used in earlier A-Class generations. This engine requires MB 229.71, a specification distinct from earlier Mercedes standards:

  • 229.71 vs 229.51: The older 229.51 spec (used in 5W-30 and 0W-40 for AMG/larger engines) has higher ash content and is incompatible with the M282’s Gasoline Particulate Filter. MB 229.71 mandates ACEA C5 chemistry with low sulphated ash.
  • 229.71 vs 229.61: MB 229.61 is the 0W-30 ACEA C3 spec for diesel engines. Using diesel-spec oil in the M282 will over-ash the GPF.
  • Filter part number: The M282 filter (A2821800001) differs from the M270 filter (A2701800009). Using the wrong filter will result in an oil leak at the filter mount due to different thread and gasket geometry.

Mercedes ASSYST (Adaptive Service System) actively monitors oil condition and adjusts the service interval. The stated 10,000-mile interval is the minimum — ASSYST may extend it further in favourable driving conditions.

Mercedes-Approved Oil Brands

  • ✅ Castrol Edge Professional OE 0W-20 (MB 229.71 approved)

  • ✅ Shell Helix Ultra Professional AG 0W-20

  • ✅ Mobil 1 ESP LV 0W-20

  • ✅ Total Quartz INEO EFS 0W-20

  • ✅ Liqui Moly Special Tec V 0W-20

Confirm MB 229.71 on the label. MB 229.5, 229.51, or 229.6 are not compatible with the M282’s emission system.

Severe Service Check

You need the 5000-mile interval (or follow ASSYST prompts) if you:

  • Drive predominantly short urban trips under 5 miles
  • Operate in sustained high ambient temperatures above 35°C
  • Use the vehicle for frequent towing or track driving
  • Operate in areas with heavy particulate pollution

Installation Details

Drain Plug Torque: 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm) — M18×1.5 thread

OEM Filter: Mercedes-Benz A2821800001

Aftermarket Filters:

  • Mann-Filter HU 711/12 x

  • Mahle OC 253

  • WIX 57145

Important: The M282 filter housing is on the top of the engine, accessible from above. Ensure the old O-ring is removed before installing the new filter — a retained old O-ring will cause an oil leak at the housing.

FAQs

What oil does a 2022 Mercedes A200 take? 0W-20 full synthetic oil meeting Mercedes-Benz 229.71 and ACEA C5.

Can I use MB 229.5 or 229.51? No. MB 229.5/229.51 oils have higher ash content and are not approved for the M282 with GPF. Use only MB 229.71.

Is the M282 the same as the M270? No. The M282 is a newer Renault-derived engine. It takes a different oil filter (A2821800001 vs A2701800009) and requires a different oil specification (229.71 vs 229.5).

How many quarts does it need? 5.4 quarts with a new filter, 5.0 without.
