Why Porsche C20 — Not A40 — Matters for the 2022 Macan

The 2022 Macan 2.0T uses the fourth-generation EA888 (evo4), which is a substantially different engine from the EA888 Gen3 found in earlier Macans and Audi A4/Q5 models. The key distinction is the GPF:

  • EA888 evo4 has a Gasoline Particulate Filter: This mandates Porsche C20 (ACEA C6, low-SAPS, 0W-20). The older Porsche A40 specification — used in earlier, non-GPF EA888 variants — specifies 0W-40 (full SAPS, ACEA A3/B4). Using A40 / 0W-40 in a GPF-equipped evo4 will clog the filter substrate within 30,000–50,000 km.
  • C20 vs C30: Porsche also has a C30 specification (0W-30, ACEA C3) for some diesel and non-GPF petrol applications. C30 is not approved for the evo4 either — its ash content is still too high for GPF compatibility.
  • 0W-20 for evo4 efficiency targets: The evo4 is optimised for lower friction than previous generations. Porsche’s WLTP fuel consumption figures for the 2022 Macan are predicated on 0W-20 oil; using thicker oil increases measured fuel consumption and CO₂.

Do not follow older Porsche Macan oil recommendations — the C20 requirement applies only to 2019+ facelifted Macans with the evo4 engine.

Porsche-Approved Oil Brands

  • ✅ Mobil 1 0W-20 ESP (Porsche C20 approved)

  • ✅ Castrol Edge Professional OE 0W-20

  • ✅ Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 0W-20

  • ✅ Liqui Moly Special Tec 0W-20

  • ✅ Total Quartz INEO EFS 0W-20

Confirm Porsche C20 (sometimes listed as C20/C30 or Porsche C20) on the product data sheet. The Porsche approval supersedes the ACEA C6 designation alone.

Severe Service Check

You need the 5000-mile interval if you:

  • Use the Macan for frequent track days or spirited driving sessions
  • Operate in sustained desert heat above 40°C
  • Tow at or near maximum trailer weight frequently
  • Drive predominantly short urban trips under 5 miles

Track use is the highest-stress condition for the evo4 — oil temperature regularly exceeds 130°C on circuit, and C20 0W-20 oil is formulated to maintain viscosity under these conditions.

Installation Details

Drain Plug Torque: 18 ft-lbs (25 Nm) — M14×1.5 thread

OEM Filter: Porsche 95811556201

Aftermarket Filters:

  • Mann-Filter HU 711/51 x

  • Mahle OC 556

  • WIX 57356

Pro Tip: The Macan oil filter is located under the engine cover at the front of the engine bay. Use a proper filter wrench rated for the EA888 cartridge housing — overtightening damages the plastic housing (max 25 Nm on the housing cap).

FAQs

What oil does a 2022 Porsche Macan 2.0T take? 0W-20 full synthetic oil meeting Porsche C20 and ACEA C6.

Can I use Porsche A40 / 0W-40 oil? No. A40 is for older Macan variants without GPF. The 2022 Macan uses the EA888 evo4 with GPF — A40’s high ash content will clog the filter.

Is C20 different from VW 508.00? Both are ACEA C5/C6 low-SAPS 0W-20 specifications, but they have different performance criteria. Only C20-approved oils are confirmed safe for the Porsche evo4 — VW 508.00 may be acceptable but verify Porsche C20 approval specifically.

How many quarts does it need? 5.5 quarts with a new filter, 5.1 without.
