Why VW 508.00 and 0W-20 Are Required for the EA211

The fourth-generation Fabia uses the Volkswagen Group EA211 1.0 TSI 3-cylinder turbo. This engine generation is equipped with a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) as standard across all European markets.

Two requirements flow from this:

  • VW 508.00 (ACEA C5, Low-SAPS): The GPF substrate traps soot particles from combustion. Oil ash — the non-combustible residue left when oil burns — accumulates in the GPF over time. VW 508.00 mandates low sulphated ash content (SAPS) to minimize this accumulation and maintain GPF performance through the filter’s service life.
  • 0W-20 viscosity: The thinner viscosity reduces friction losses and pumping losses at operating temperature, helping the Fabia meet European fuel economy and CO₂ targets.

Older VW 504.00 (5W-30) oils are not suitable: their higher ash content will accelerate GPF clogging and is not approved by Skoda for this engine generation.

Skoda-Approved Oil Brands

  • ✅ Castrol Edge 0W-20 Longlife IV (VW 508.00 approved)

  • ✅ Shell Helix Ultra ECT C5 0W-20

  • ✅ Mobil 1 ESP LV 0W-20

  • ✅ Total Quartz INEO LongLife 0W-20

  • ✅ Liqui Moly Longtime Top 0W-20

Confirm VW 508.00 approval on the label. The spec must appear on the bottle — “suitable for VW” marketing language without the explicit approval number is not sufficient.

Severe Service Check

You need the 10000-mile interval if you:

  • Drive short trips under 5 miles that prevent GPF regeneration cycles from completing
  • Operate primarily in dense urban traffic
  • Regularly tow or carry maximum loads
  • Drive in sustained very cold conditions below -20°C

FAQs

What oil does a 2022 Skoda Fabia 1.0 TSI take? 0W-20 full synthetic oil meeting VW 508.00 and ACEA C5.

Is the Fabia 1.0 TSI the same engine as the SEAT Ibiza 1.0 TSI? Yes — both use the VW Group EA211 1.0 TSI. The oil specification (VW 508.00, 0W-20) and capacity are identical.

Can I use 5W-30 VW 504.00 oil? No. VW 504.00 / 5W-30 has higher ash content that will damage the GPF. Only VW 508.00 / 0W-20 is approved for this engine.

How often should I change the oil? Every 20,000 miles or 2 years under the VW Longlife schedule. Every 10,000 miles or 1 year for severe service.
