Why VW 508.00 and Active Cylinder Management Demand Precise Oil
The 1.5 TSI EA211 evo features Active Cylinder Technology (ACT) — cylinders 2 and 3 deactivate under light throttle loads to reduce fuel consumption. This makes oil specification critical in two ways:
- Oil pressure precision for ACT: When cylinders deactivate, solenoid valves use oil pressure to switch off the intake and exhaust cam followers. VW 508.00 (0W-20, ACEA C5) is calibrated for the exact pressure-flow characteristics the ACT solenoids require. A thicker 5W-30 oil does not respond quickly enough to the solenoid valves, causing rough deactivation transitions and potential cam follower wear.
- Low-SAPS for GPF: The EA211 evo is fitted with a Gasoline Particulate Filter. VW 508.00 mandates low sulphated ash content (ACEA C5) to prevent GPF clogging. Earlier VW 504.00 or 502.00 oils (5W-30 or 5W-40) must not be used — their ash content will shorten GPF service life.
The ACT system’s oil-pressure dependence makes a timely oil change more important in this engine than in non-ACT units: degraded oil loses the precise viscosity characteristics needed for crisp cylinder switching.
Volkswagen-Approved Oil Brands

Confirm VW 508.00 on the label. VW 504.00 or 502.00 are not suitable for this engine generation.
Severe Service Check
You need the 10000-mile interval if you:
- Drive predominantly short trips under 5 miles (GPF cannot complete regeneration)
- Operate primarily in stop-and-go city traffic where ACT is not able to operate efficiently
- Regularly tow or carry heavy loads
- Drive in sustained extreme cold below -20°C

FAQs
What oil does a 2022 VW T-Roc 1.5 TSI take? 0W-20 full synthetic oil meeting VW 508.00 and ACEA C5.
Why can’t I use VW 504.00 / 5W-30? The T-Roc’s Active Cylinder Technology requires the precise viscosity profile of 0W-20 VW 508.00 for correct ACT operation. Additionally, 504.00 has higher ash content that will damage the GPF.
How many quarts does it need? 4.5 quarts with a new filter, 4.1 without.
How often should I change the oil? Every 20,000 miles or 2 years under the VW Longlife service schedule. Every 10,000 miles for severe service.
