GM’s owner’s manual for the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox with the 1.5L turbo (LYX) says to use full synthetic engine oil that meets the dexos1 specification, in SAE 0W-20 viscosity. Look for the dexos1 approved logo on the bottle.
Capacity Depends on Drivetrain

GM lists these as approximate: fill to about that level, then recheck the dipstick and top up to the operating range. Many listings quote only the 4.2 qt FWD figure, which leaves an AWD Equinox about a quart low.
When to Change the Oil
The Equinox uses GM’s Engine Oil Life System, which calculates the change point from engine revolutions, temperature and miles driven. When CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON appears, change the oil within the next 1 000 km (600 mi). GM also requires:
- At least once a year: change the oil and filter and reset the system, even if the display hasn’t asked for it.
- After an accidental reset: change the oil at 5 000 km (3,000 mi) since the last change.
The manual also says not to add anything to the oil, because dexos-approved oil is all the engine needs.
What We Couldn’t Confirm
- OEM oil filter part number and drain plug torque. Neither appears in the owner’s manual.
- dexos1 generation. The manual says dexos1 without naming a generation.
- Capacity without filter. GM publishes only the with-filter figure.
