Complete Oil Specifications
GM’s owner manual for the 2024 Chevrolet Trax with the 1.2L L3 Gas Engine (LIH) says to use full synthetic engine oil that meets the dexos1 specification, in SAE 5W-30 viscosity. Look for the dexos1 approved logo. Engine oil capacity is 4.0 L (4.2 qt) with the filter.
Extreme Cold
Where temperatures fall below -29 °C (-20 °F), GM says an SAE 0W-30 oil may be used for easier cold starting. It should still meet the dexos1 specification.
When to Change the Oil
The Trax uses GM’s Engine Oil Life System, which works out the change point from engine revolutions, temperature and miles driven. When CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON appears, change the oil within the next 1 000 km (600 mi). GM also requires:
- At least once a year: change the oil and filter, even if the system hasn’t asked for it.
- After an accidental reset: change the oil at 5 000 km (3,000 mi) since the last change.
What We Couldn’t Confirm
- Capacity without the filter, OEM filter part number and drain plug torque. None appear in the owner manual.
- dexos1 generation. The manual text says dexos1 without naming a generation.
