The difference between 5W-30 and 5W-40 engine oil is their high-temperature SAE viscosity grade: both meet the 5W winter classification, while SAE 40 remains in a higher viscosity band at engine operating temperature than SAE 30. What 5W-30 and 5W-40 Mean

SAE J300 classifies engine oils by rheological—flow and viscosity—limits. SAE explicitly says the standard does not include other oil characteristics. The first part, 5W, is the winter classification. The second number identifies the viscosity grade at high operating temperature.

Because both oils are 5W grades, they meet the same classification limits for that winter grade. They are not guaranteed to flow identically at every cold temperature: formulations can sit at different points inside the permitted limits.

At operating temperature, 5W-40 belongs to a higher viscosity band than 5W-30. That can produce a thicker oil film in an engine designed for it, but it can also increase pumping and friction losses or alter hydraulically controlled systems in an engine designed for 5W-30.

Cold-Start Differences

The shared 5W label is the main similarity. It does not prove that:

  • the base oils are the same;
  • cold-cranking results are identical;
  • one oil carries the same API, ACEA, ILSAC, or OEM approvals;
  • both are permitted at the same minimum ambient temperature for your engine.

Check the owner’s-manual temperature chart and the complete bottle label. A 0W grade may be the approved cold-weather alternative on some vehicles; other engines allow no viscosity substitution.

Operating-Temperature Differences

The “30” and “40” describe different high-temperature viscosity classifications, not oil temperature limits. A 5W-40 does not simply “withstand 10 degrees more heat.”

In an approved application, the higher 40 grade may be used where the engine design and operating conditions call for it. In an unapproved application, the extra viscosity can affect flow, variable-valve-timing response, fuel economy, or emissions calibration.

General Motors’ viscosity guidance for specific 2014 5.3L and 6.2L trucks illustrates the rule: those engines were validated with dexos1 0W-20, and GM told owners not to substitute a different grade based on availability or price. Always apply that manufacturer-first logic to 5W-30 versus 5W-40.

Fuel Economy

All else equal, moving a lower-viscosity oil generally requires less energy. GM notes that higher-than-required viscosity creates more drag, especially when cold. But “thinner saves fuel” is not permission to use 5W-30 in an engine that requires 5W-40.

The practical fuel-economy choice is the lowest viscosity the manufacturer approves for the exact engine and operating condition, not the lowest number on the shelf.

High-Temperature and Heavy-Load Operation

Do not switch to 5W-40 solely because the weather is hot, the vehicle tows, or the engine is turbocharged. Some manuals list multiple grades by ambient temperature or duty cycle; others require one grade and a particular OEM approval.

If the manual lists both 5W-30 and 5W-40, follow its temperature, load, service-interval, and market notes. If it lists only one, the safe assumption is not to substitute without manufacturer guidance.

Older vs. Newer Engines

Engine age does not select viscosity. An older engine may still depend on narrow oil passages and hydraulic controls designed for its original grade. A newer engine may approve more than one viscosity. Wear, oil consumption, and leakage are diagnostic issues—not automatic reasons to pour in a thicker oil.

OEM Approval Matters More Than Viscosity Alone

Two bottles marked 5W-30 can be incompatible with the same engine because SAE J300 covers viscosity only. The performance package may need to satisfy API or ACEA categories plus an OEM standard such as dexos, a Mercedes-Benz Approval, or a Volkswagen specification.

For example, Mercedes-Benz technical guidance for its OM642, OM651, and OM654 diesels lists specific MB Approval sheets and then tells technicians to observe viscosity restrictions. A 5W-30 without the required approval is not made suitable by sharing the viscosity label.

Use this order:

  1. exact year, model, market, and engine;
  2. required OEM approval;
  3. required API/ACEA/ILSAC category;
  4. permitted SAE viscosity and temperature range;
  5. product label or current approved-oil list.

Can You Mix 5W-30 and 5W-40?

Do not calculate a homemade “5W-35.” SAE grades are measured performance bands, not numbers that can be averaged arithmetically.

For an emergency top-up, first look for an oil with the required specification and approved viscosity. If only a different viscosity is available, consult the owner’s manual or manufacturer roadside guidance. Some manufacturers permit a temporary substitute and request an oil change afterward; others are stricter.

Use 5W-30 when the manufacturer approves 5W-30 for the exact engine, market, and conditions. Use 5W-40 when it approves 5W-40. If both are listed, apply the manual’s temperature and duty-cycle conditions rather than a generic internet rule.
