Honda’s owner’s manual for the 2022 Pilot calls for Honda Genuine Motor Oil 0W-20 or an API Premium-grade 0W-20 detergent oil that carries the API Certification Seal. Engine oil change capacity is 5.7 US qt (5.4 L) including the filter, or 5.4 US qt (5.1 L) without it.
Is Synthetic Oil Required?
No. The manual permits synthetic oil but doesn’t require it: synthetic motor oil is acceptable if it carries the API Certification Seal and is the specified 0W-20 viscosity grade. The manual also states the engine does not require oil additives, and that additives may adversely affect engine performance and durability.
When to Change the Oil
The Pilot uses Honda’s Maintenance Minder, which calculates remaining engine oil life and shows Maintenance Due Soon (15–6% oil life), Due Now (5–1%) and Past Due. Maintenance code A means replace the engine oil; code B means replace the engine oil and oil filter. If Due Now hasn’t appeared more than 12 months after the display was reset, Honda says to change the oil every year anyway.

- Engine block code. The manual lists the engine by displacement (3,471 cm3), not by the J35Y6 code often quoted elsewhere.
- OEM oil filter part number and drain plug torque. Neither appears in the owner’s manual, so neither is published here.
- API/ILSAC performance category (e.g. SP, GF-6A). The manual specifies API Premium-grade oil with the API Certification Seal rather than naming a category.
