Complete Oil Specifications
The owner’s manual for the 2021 Jeep Cherokee recommends API Certified SAE 5W-20 engine oil meeting FCA Material Standard MS-6395 (such as Mopar, Pennzoil or Shell Helix) for the 3.2L engine. It also tells you to check the engine oil filler cap for the correct SAE grade. Engine oil capacity is 6 quarts (5.6 liters) with the filter.
Don’t Mix Up the Cherokee Engines
The 2021 Cherokee’s three engines take different oil:
| Engine | Oil in the owner’s manual |
|---|---|
| 2.0L | Mopar API SP/GF-6A SAE 5W-30 full synthetic (MS-13340) |
| 2.4L | API Certified SAE 0W-20 (MS-6395) |
| 3.2L | API Certified SAE 5W-20 (MS-6395) |
When to Change the Oil
The Cherokee has an automatic oil change indicator. When “Oil Change Required” appears, have the vehicle serviced within the next 500 miles (805 km). The manual adds a hard limit: oil change intervals should never exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km), 12 months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first.
Oil Filter
The manual recommends a Mopar engine oil filter. If one isn’t available, use a filter that meets or exceeds SAE/USCAR-36 performance requirements.
What We Couldn’t Confirm
- OEM filter part number and drain plug torque. Neither appears in the owner’s manual.
- Capacity without the filter. The manual lists only the with-filter figure.
- Engine family name. The manual calls it the “3.2L Engine” and doesn’t name it Pentastar or V6.
