Complete Oil Specifications
Mazda’s owner’s manual for the 2023 CX-9 says to use SAE 5W-30 engine oil “Certified For Gasoline Engines” by the American Petroleum Institute (API), the mark that shows the oil meets ILSAC standards. Mazda Genuine 5W-30 Oil is used at the factory, and Mazda says it is required to achieve optimum fuel economy. Engine oil capacity is approximately 5.1 US qt (4.8 L) with oil filter replacement and 4.9 US qt (4.6 L) without.
When to Change the Oil
U.S. vehicles default to Engine Oil Flexible Maintenance (Schedule 1): replace the oil and filter when the wrench indicator light turns on, and at least every 12 months or 7,500 miles (12,000 km). If the vehicle is used in the severe driving conditions Mazda lists, follow Schedule 2 with fixed maintenance instead. Reset the engine oil data after every oil change.
Checking the Level
Park on level ground, warm the engine to normal operating temperature, turn it off and wait at least 5 minutes. The level is normal between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick. Don’t overfill.
What We Couldn’t Confirm
