Toyota’s owner’s manual for the 2022 Highlander (2GR-FKS 3.5L V6) calls for Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent ILSAC GF-6A multigrade oil, with a recommended viscosity of SAE 0W-20. Oil capacity is 5.8 qt (5.5 L) with the filter and 5.6 qt (5.3 L) without it.

Can I Use 5W-20?

Only temporarily. Toyota says SAE 0W-20 is the best choice for fuel economy and cold starting. If 0W-20 isn’t available you can use SAE 5W-20, but it must be replaced with 0W-20 at the next oil change.

Checking the Level After a Change

Toyota’s capacity figures are a reference for a drain and refill. After refilling, warm up the engine, turn it off, wait more than 5 minutes, and check the level on the dipstick before adding more.
