So flip the bottle over. The small print — VW 502 00, 504 00, 507 00, 508 00 — is the only text that decides whether your camshaft survives the winter.

And no, newer isn’t better. Newer means different engine. The “latest and greatest” 0W-20 will wipe the bearings in an old 1.8T just as fast as cheap 5W-40 will strangle a Mk8 GTI.

VW 502 00: The Thick Old-School Stuff

Older engines (classic 1.8T, early EA888) have bearing clearances that need a thick oil wedge to keep metal off metal. That’s 502 00’s whole job.

The key number: HTHS viscosity of at least 3.5 mPa·s — a measure of whether the oil film survives 150°C and a spooling turbo without collapsing. Usually a 5W-40 or 0W-40, loaded with old-school additives (high SAPS: ash, phosphorus, sulfur).

Great wear protection. Absolute poison for anything with a particulate filter.

VW 504 00 / 507 00: The Exhaust Savers

These “LongLife III” specs (504 00 = gasoline, 507 00 = diesel) cut the ash, phosphorus, and sulfur way down. Why? Because those chemicals slowly kill catalytic converters — and in a TDI, unburnable ash packs the diesel particulate filter shut. Permanently. That’s a four-figure repair, not a cleaning.

There’s a bonus job too. Direct-injection engines bake oil vapor onto their intake valves, so 504 00 oils must evaporate less than 11% in the NOACK volatility test. Less vapor, less carbon crust choking your airflow.

VW 508 00 / 509 00: The Green 0W-20. Handle With Care.

To hit CO2 targets, VW dropped the HTHS requirement to a razor-thin 2.6–2.9 mPa·s. Modern engines survive this only because they were redesigned for it — special bearing coatings, high-flow oil pumps. The oil and the hardware are a matched pair.

Pour it into a 2012 A4 and the engine starts quietly eating itself.

That’s why every 508/509 oil is dyed green. It’s a forensic marker. Engine dies, oil isn’t green — VW knows the wrong spec went in, and your warranty goes with it.

One more trap: not all green oils are the same. Lab tests of 16+ approved oils show real differences. City-driving hybrid? Pick a thinner one for fast cold starts. Tuned EA888 on the highway?
