Ford’s owner’s manual for the 2024 Explorer with the 2.3L EcoBoost engine recommends Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C961-A1. If Motorcraft oil isn’t available, use an SAE 5W-30 oil that shows the API Certification Mark for gasoline engines. Engine oil capacity is 5.2 qt (4.9 L) including the oil filter.
Oil Filter
Ford lists the Motorcraft FL-910-S engine oil filter. If it isn’t available, use a filter that meets SAE/USCAR-36.
Extreme Cold
Where ambient temperatures reach -22°F (-30°C) or below, Ford recommends Engine Oil - SAE 0W-30 (WSS-M2C963-A1) for better cold starting.
When to Change the Oil
The Explorer’s Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor shows an OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message when an oil change is due. The manual’s guideline examples are 7,500-10,000 mi (12,000-16,000 km) for normal use, 5,000-7,500 mi (8,000-12,000 km) for severe use and 3,000-5,000 mi (4,800-8,000 km) for extreme use, and it says not to exceed one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km) between service intervals.
