MINI’s owner’s manual for the 2021 Hardtop, including the Cooper S, says to use gasoline engine oil that meets BMW Longlife-01 FE, BMW Longlife-14 FE+ or BMW Longlife-17 FE+, in SAE 0W-20 or SAE 0W-30 viscosity.
Topping Up Without Longlife Oil
If an oil suitable for continuous use isn’t available, MINI allows adding up to 1 US quart (1 liter) of an oil rated API SL, API SM or API SN. That’s for topping up only. It doesn’t approve API-only oil for a full oil change. The manual also warns against oil additives.
When to Change the Oil
The Cooper S uses Condition Based Service (CBS), which shows when service is due instead of a fixed mileage printed in the manual. MINI recommends not exceeding the intervals shown in the vehicle, and recommends having a dealer’s service center or another qualified shop do the oil change.
What We Couldn’t Confirm
- Engine oil capacity. The owner’s manual doesn’t publish a fixed quart figure.
- Engine displacement and code. The manual identifies the model as “Cooper S” and doesn’t print the displacement or the B48 code often quoted elsewhere.
- OEM oil filter part number and drain plug torque. Neither appears in the owner’s manual.
